I'm a sucker for improv comedy; Spinal Tap, Best in Show and Curb Your Enthusiasm are some of my fave comedies. Humor for me is largely about awkwardness, and improv just oozes it. Delusional Downtown Divas is a new web series on Index Magazine's recently relaunched website. It follows three young artists trying to make it in the Big Apple. It's like MTV's the City, but for "avantgarde, asymmetrical" art hispters. Like all improv comedies, it starts a little slow but you gotta keep your ear tuned for some comedy gems. There are 5 episodes out so far. My favorite moment so far is episode 4 when a cab driver explains art (Museum of Natural History dinosaurs?) and the meaning of life to the show's main character, Agness (pronounced Agnèz to sound French).

I had a meaningful conversation about my future last night. I was at the Albion for about 20 minutes last night (before my mainstream bro wanted to leave ot go to Franks). One of my classmates came up to me, who up until now I have only engaged in small talk with. We were both buzzed so we had a really meaningful conversation about what we would do if we didn't get into grad school. He said he wanted to study architecture, or carpentry. I thought that was beautiful at the time. This got me thinking. Now that Wall Street and the City are done, and the Big Three Autoz are dying, what is the future going to look like? Will it be like Mad Max where everyone rides around in the desert raiding each other and wearing leather? Will it be like the Grapes of Wrath, and everyone will migrate to pick peaches in the OC with the Mexicans?

Maybe I'll start a commune in BC where everyone works together and shares the fruit of their labour.

I think I am going to stop DJing electronic music with my laptop and start DJing with two walkmen and play acoustic and folk songs.

I am going to start off this post on a completely unrelated tangent: Daniel Craig's face. I was looking for a Quantum of Solace pic and came across this:

Daniel Craig is a good looking dude and I'll be the first to admit that. But what is up with his face on the right? He looks like an alcoholic gremlin whose been inside watching EastEnders back to back for 4 months. Did he get plastic surgery? Was he ridiculously hungover? Who knows.

Anyways, I was looking for a Quantum of Solace pic because I just bombed my 4th year Macroeconomics midterm (or won the Nobel Prize because I definately invented half my answers on the spot). Being bumbed out I looked for a little solace on the internet at the library. This made me think of Quantum of Solace. This then made me think of how it would have been way funnier if they called the movie Quantum of Salsa, seeing as how it was less about geopolitics and espionage and more about helping little Bolivian peasant farmers.

Dames of Downtown made me smile with a cool post of Facebook confessions (#15 especially), Paul's comment on the post also made me smile because we were thinking the exact same thing upon reading the post.

Where was I? Oh yeah. Dames put up a great Dj Mehdi mix but linked it to a crazy Soulwax mix by mistake.

On a side note, this Google/Blogger/RIAA shit is ridiculous. Music labels give out promo copies to certain high profile blogs to hype up artists. Bottom feeder blogs like ours have to get them from the top blogs to post on our own. So why the hell does our shit get taken down? Google especially messed up when they took down all of Palms Out's mp3 posts which they had every legal right to put up seeing as how they are a record label and other labels gave them the tracks to post up.

Hello World! Ok so you probably know by now, Me and Mo did our first DJ set at Vinyl on Tuesday. It was very nice and made me feel warm and fuzzy inside. I got drunk while I was playing, and so did Mo (maybe an explanation for the warm fuzziness?). Brendan from Gosh Damn came down with a couple of buddies and showed support, which was totally fucking super cool of him! Thanks Brendan, y0u da b0m|3. Almost no one showed up.. I have to thank NBC for showing a new episode of 'The biggest Loser" for that. We got our first groupie though, her internet name is )v(ichelle. I hope she is nice. Mean girls scare me. AHHHHHHHHH!!!

On a side note, I've been very bored lately. I go to the gym a lot because I hear girls like big muscles. I hear girls also don't like mustaches (except for )v(ichelle) so I get big muscles to offset my mustache. I've been looking for a job but apparently no one is hiring. OMFG Depressions are DEPRESSING! Geezee... I've also been cleaning the house a lot lately too. Mo goes to school everyday to learn economics. He is going to make lots of money someday, so I have to look pretty for him. It appears I have pretty much turned into a housewife.

Aren't I pretty? I have to go work on my resume so I can get a job and make money. Rogers actually came to our house today and said we owe them $300 dollars or they are going to cut off our internet. Rogers is bad people. Here is a song about "The rat race".

I usually waste around half my day on the internet clicking links and googling stuff related to said links. This is why I'm at the library all day; it takes me six hours to do 15 minutes of real work. Today I ended up on an awesome Treasure Fingers mixtape which pretty much sounds like what Tuesday night would sound like if we weren't so entry level. Anyways, that lead into a google search for Cassius ending on this music video:

This video took me way back to the nineties. And early puberty. When I was a kid I used to go to Morocco in the summer to see my extended family. Most of my days were spent playing soccer outside because being inside sucks. Being inside sucks because Moroccan TV in the 90's sucked: it consisted of Egyptian and Argentine tele-novelas and terribly dubbed over in French, American shows which never hit it big (and the American government in all likelihood gave away for free to foreign countries to spread blue jeans and McDonalds around the world). But every so often, when the moons aligned, I would get to watch satellite television. Satellite television in the summer was part of two formative experiences for me: women (I won't get into this one on the blog) and indie music.

Viva Zwei was the indie sister of the German music station Viva (think MTV 2 when it first started). Viva Zwei introduced me to french touch, Big Beat, German rap (WAY better than French rap because I hated everything French (except French Touch) at the time--it was the cool thing to do in a French school). The nineties had some of the most amazing music videos ever -- Chemical Brothers' Hey Boy Hey Girl, The Prodigy's Smack my Bitch Up (that one goes under both formative experiences), Radiohead's Paranoid Android, Daft Punk's Da Funk and some Swedish techno video where they make a curling stone. But it wasn't all indie. European music stations also showed me the Macarena and the Backstreet Boys well before they hit the States.

As for women, long story short, I used up all of my pimp juice from the ages of 4 to 7 so puberty was pretty slow business.

Who am I kidding? I peaked when I was 6 and it's been slow ever since. But I'll be damned if I wasn't the smothest fucking 6 year old Don Juan de la Nizzouch in the entire Tri State Area.

I wonder why I don't have alot of girl "friends" or an actual girlfriend. Is it my mustache?

Is it because I don't own a pair of LA gears? Is it because I the black Jube Jubes? Maybe I just have no game. A couple years ago, in my last year of high school, I got some advice from a friend about girls. He told me "Paul, talk about things you are good at, to make yourself stand out from the other guys". I don't think his advice was good. Every time I talk about my kill-streaks and headshot count on Call of Duty Advanced Modern Warfare 4.. I don't get a kiss at the end of the night. This makes me sad because I like kisses (especially the French ones). I thought to myself, maybe girls don't want to hear about my awesome video game skillz, so on the next time I'm on a date, think of something else I'm good at to talk about.

The date happened.. actually several dates happened.. I talked about my Battlestar Galatica watching skillz, my hamburger helper eating skillz, my blogging skillz.. and alas.. still nothing. Fuck my high school friend. That bastard gave the shittiest advice ever. I think after my DJ set at Vinyl on Tuesday, girls will like me. I'm going to look super cool and play super HOT TRAKS. I've selected my awesome super mario mushroom shirt and my flyest pair of headphones to wear to make sure I look SUPER COOL. I'm such a loser. I hope we have groupies that are waiting for us at our first gig. If not, I will entice a girl with my music, then hopefully bring her home and feed her the finest of the fried calamaris and whitest of white wines. Notice how I didn't talk about love making skillz above? I won't get into that in this post. *sigh*.

I downloaded a ton of songs (high quality versions too!) after New Year's. Why you may ask? Because everyone was posting up best of lists allowing me to download tracks that had been taken down previously (I recommend you all go do the same).

Which is why I haven't been posting up much music, I haven't had a chance to listen to it. I also started messing around with Traktor over the break. So instead of listening to the new tracks traditionally, I've been mixing them in Traktor (which is the funnest music program since Mixman Studio--oh yeah, I went all the way back to '98 mah'fuckas). Speaking of Portland, electro duo Yacht did the sickest remix of Ratatat's Mirando. Ratatat got big in part thanks to their remixes of gangsta rap. So Yacht took Ratatat's discoesque electro and threw some chopped and skrewed 1990's South Central lyrics over it and made it super badass.

I wonder how ironic people are in Portland. Are they like so ironic they don't even notice irony anymore, like it's their new defacto thought process, and seriousness is the new irony?

French fries are Belgian. "Belgian fries" didn't have as much sex appeal so the Americans called them French. The Brits call them chips because they hate the French and sure as fuck aren't going to give credit to their mongoloid half-brothers, the Belgians (or at least that's what the French think of them). Are Soulwax French touch? Yes, because no matter how hard they try, the Belgians are inextricably linked to the French and will forever be culturally assimilated (eg. Tintin).

Guess Who's Back!

Flight of the Conchords was one of my biggest obsessions from 2007 and after a long hiatus they're back with a new season premiering in January (I posted the leaked premiere below).
For those who don't know Flight, I highly recommend you get caught up on season 1. It's a comedy series chopped up with musical segments. When I first saw this show I didn't really know what to make of it. Flight of the Conchords are a two piece "parody folk group" who try to make it big in New York City, but because of their weird style and Murray's horrible band management they get shit gigs, no love (except from their one deranged fan Mel) and hilarity ensues. This show is top notch in pretty much every aspect, from the writing to the acting, to the actual songs played. Here are a couple of good clips I found on the Youtube:

I promise this website won't become "Before They Were Techno Stars". But I also came across some old Daft Punk history from back when they were in high school in Paris. Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter formed a rock trio with Laurent Brancowitz, future guitarist of Phoenix, called Darlin'. They recorded a demo which was described as "daft punk" by some music journalist. Soon after Guy-Manuel and Thomas got into electronic music and formed Daft Punk.

Darlin' has a MySpace (WTF! The band broke up in 1993) with two tracks on it: Darlin' and Cindy So Loud.

This is an old track Andrew VanWyngarden of MGMT fame recorded during his Wesleyan days for an environment class called Hazardous Earth: Stuff That Will Kill You (real name). It's probably my new favorite MGMT track. I wonder what it must have been like to be in class, waiting for some lame Powerpoint presentation and then out of nowhere this musical gem drops like ash rain on Pompeii!
